An Intro to Weight Bias in Medicine
and Health at Every Size
Medical providers' weight bias and patients' internalized weight stigma negatively impact mental and physical health. The current weight-normative medical model does not provide protection against this bias and, in fact, often endorses and upholds it. Health At Every Size (HAES) is a paradigm that addresses these issues along with other broad forces that impact population health, while also helping people find sustainable practices that support individual well-being.
Real-life examples
June 1, 2022, presenters Lisa Du Breuil and Suzanne Johnson led a virtual presentation to introduce examples of weight bias and stigma in culture and medicine, discussed HAES principles, and explored some of the common issues with using the HAES approach in 'real-life' situations.*
HAES pre-recorded webinar
In this webinar, Lisa Du Breuil explains the HAES principles and how internalized stigma as well as provider bias impacts health outcomes. You'll learn how to use less stigmatizing language for discussing weight and health concerns with overweight patients.
